I recently unearthed one while gardening and got the idea for this play set. I had made the forerunner of this quilt for a neighbor boy when he was three years old. I saw him at a wedding this summer. He’s in second grade now. He sort of slunk up to my side and whispered, “I still play with my quilt”. 43½” square is the finished size

Sand ‘n Sun Palm Tree

Trunk and leaves are dimensional. The trunk is lightly stuffed. The palm fronds are sewn with a technique I developed, called single edge applique. The leaves are sewn and turned. They are then sewn on one side to a line that causes them to stand up and look the way leaves look in nature. If you’d like to sew a quilt that breaks with tradition - here it is! I’ve seen it done as a single palm tree on the back of a jacket. One teacher made one that has a hurricane block - sew fun. 67 X 89½” is the finished size.

The pattern shows an easy technique to make fusible appliques with no raw edges. 78 X 90 and 72 X 88 sizes are shown. Enlarge by adding borders. Take your fish viewing template with you to the fabric store to see what will show in the bowl. Try putting unexpected things in the fish bowls. I found some fabric that had cats in swim suits, it just had to become one of the fish bowls! It is also great fun to embroider fish for your bowls. This quilt is suitable for beginners.
